Impressions from the 2024 #FTBrazil Summit: Brazil's Frustrated Roar

The 2024 FT Brazil Summit last week unfolded against a backdrop of mixed emotions. While the Brazilian private sector and select state governments have made remarkable strides in clean energy, agribusiness, and digital solutions, frustration lingers due to the lack of global recognition. This disconnect stems from a communication gap: Brazilians struggle to effectively position their organizations internationally.

Often, discussions about Brazil’s strides on clean energy are overshadowed by deforestation concerns. Yet, the private sector is leading the way and transitioning to green energy with cost-effective solutions. Similarly, Brazil's digital health system, recognized by the UN as a global model, is overshadowed by concerns about government mismanagement and underfunding.

Groundbreaking collaborations between the private sector and forward-thinking state governors, like those in Piauí and Minas Gerais haven’t garnered the international recognition these initiatives deserve.  Piauí's market-friendly agendas and partnerships with Google and MIT ensure a skilled workforce that will pay dividends in the area for decades to come. Minas Gerais is taking a bold approach to "de-commoditize" its coffee, treating it more like fine wine to enhance competitiveness and climb the value chain.

The mindset to marketing these achievements remains a challenge. Brazilian professionals underestimate their global standing and downplay the tremendous strides being made in the region as compared to global peers. Discussions at the conference revealed a belief that Brazilian professionals could rival their tech peers in India, global apparel brands, and clean energy competitors, despite undervaluing their own potential.

However, those in attendance could not ignore the beacon of hope that emerged at the 2024 summit. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and a focus on Brazil's world-leading, transformative changes. The entrepreneurial spirit of the private sector is gaining momentum, with companies and state investment offices positioning themselves as innovative, pro-ESG players to attract foreign direct investments.

While challenges persist, 2024 marks a turning point. It underscores Brazil's resilience and determination to overcome obstacles of perception and assert its position on the global stage. By effectively communicating its achievements and embracing narratives aligned with global sustainability and innovation, Brazil can finally take its rightful place internationally. The roar is undeniable; now Brazil must ensure the world hears it loud and clear.
